The College of Engineering Dean’s List Awards Ceremony for the 2019 Spring Semester was held on October 2nd. The ceremony was held at the KAIST Academic Cultural Complex (5F, Sky Lounge) with about 70 attendees including Dean Bae Choongsik of the College of Engineering, Vice Dean Choi Sungyool of the College of Engineering, and the Manager of Academic & Student Affairs Team for College of Engineering. Students on the Dean’s List include students with academic performance within the top 3% of the respective departments, or those who have demonstrated outstanding creativity and practical application skills in entrepreneurship and idea competitions. The students were selected from those fulfilling a range of criteria such as having completed 12 credits or more in the semester, including nine credits or more in major courses. The College of Engineering organized ceremony began with an introduction to the awards, followed by the presentation of individual awards. Two students then gave acceptance speeches on behalf of the recipients, followed by a conversation with an award recipient from the 5th Dean’s List (2016 Spring semester, PhD student Noh Yuji of the School of Electrical Engineering). The ceremony closed with a congratulatory speech from the Dean of the College of Engineering (professor Bae Choongsik). Dean Bae Choongsik shared sincere words of encouragement, saying, “I congratulate all the students receiving awards today, and hope that you go on to play important roles in spreading the proud name of KAIST worldwide.”

A joint meeting between the Deans of Seoul National University College of Engineering and KAIST College of Engineering was held on September 30th. The meeting was held in Seoul National University, and attended by the Dean of the College of Engineering (professor Bae Choongsik) and five other professors from KAIST, as well as the Dean of Seoul National University College of Engineering (Professor Char Kookheon) and six other key personnel from SNU. The meeting began with presentations on the respective colleges, followed by an introduction to a consulting program for companies in response to new export regulations from Japan, and a discussion of strategic cooperation and education strategies in intellectual property. The meeting paved the way for cooperation between the Colleges of Engineering at SNU and KAIST in guiding national strategies for the future.

A workshop for academic affairs staff [College of Natural Sciences, Dean of College of Life Science & Bioengineering, College of Engineering] was held on September 26th and 27th. This staff workshop set itself apart from the workshops of previous years, being held according to groupings of staff, rather than for the entire body of employees. Among the 6 groups, the Academic Affairs Group comprising the respective colleges has been formed to enable smooth cooperation between the colleges. The workshop began with a speech by the Dean of the College of Engineering (Professor Bae Choongsik) on behalf of the deans of the respective colleges. This was followed by a diverse program that included compulsory education for staff (sexual abuse prevention, domestic violence prevention) and a lucky draw.

A College of Engineering Heads of Department Meeting was held on September 18th. Before the meeting, with the appointment of a new Head of Department for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, a plaque of appreciation was presented to the former Head of Department Professor Lee Hyukmo for his faithful service over the years. The meeting was attended by Professor Shin Sung-chul, President of KAIST.

The College of Engineering Innovation Workshop was held on August 28th (Thu) and 29th (Fri). The objective of the workshop was to discuss current issues at the College of Engineering as well as strategies for future development and implementation plans for innovation goals. It was attended by the Dean, Vice Dean, all Heads of Department, and three committees (planning, promotion, external cooperation) of the College of Engineering. A meeting of the Heads of Department and in-depth discussions between the three College of Engineering committees were held. At the expanded meeting of the Heads of Department and three committees, the Dean (Professor Bae Choongsik) gave a briefing on the progress of innovation tasks, followed by a presentation on the current status of KAIST Advisors on Materials and Parts (KAMP) and progress reports from the respective committees.

Dean Bae Choongsik of the College of Engineering conducted the Opening Ceremony of the 2019 International Conference on Optical MEMS and Nanophotonics (IEEE OMN 2019) on the 29th. IEEE OMN 2019 is an important event which gathers leading researchers from around the world to share their professional expertise and latest trends in science and technology, while building networks for exchange and industry-academia cooperation.

Professor Stephen P. Boyd, who heads the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, visited the College of Engineering at KAIST on July 29th. Professor Boyd came to give a lecture jointly organized by the KAIST College of Engineering, ‘Multi-Scale Chemical Engineering’ BK21 Plus team, and the Smart Digital Education Project. After the lecture, he had a meeting with the Dean of the College of Engineering (Professor Bae Choongsik). Stephen P. Boyd studies the application of convex optimization in control systems, signal processing, machine learning and finance, and has been cited more than 150,000 times according to Google Scholar.

KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology)’s KIST Joint Research Lab is a program that selects leading professors in Korea to jointly conduct strategic research with the government funded institute. Professor Kang Kibum of the College of Engineering (Department of Materials Science and Engineering) was selected for the program, and the signboard hanging ceremony for the KIST-KAIST Joint Research Lab was held on July 24th. The ceremony was attended by key personnel from KAIST including Park Hyunwook, Vice President for Research and Bae Choongsik, Dean of the College of Engineering. They were joined by four attendees from KIST including Yang Eunkyeong, Head of the International Affairs Division, and Jang Junyeon, Director of the Post-Silicon Semiconductor Institute.

A Heads of Department Meeting was held at the College of Engineering (Dean Bae Choongsik) to discuss the school’s strategy for the future. Heads of Department Meetings at the College of Engineering are held at the end of each month, and the 7th meeting for 2019 was held in the Main Conference Room at the College of Engineering. This meeting was also attended by KAIST Provost and Executive Vice President Lee Kwanghyung.
First Commencement Ceremony of..
On June 28, KAIST’s College of Engineering attended the first commencement ceremony of Chongqing Liangjiang KAIST International Program (CLKIP) at Chongqing University of Technology. The first batch of graduates included 50 bachelor’s, specifically, 28 in electronic information engineering and 22 in computer science and technology, and 1 master’s in electronic information engineering. The graduates plan to seek employment (including SK Hynix), study abroad, or join graduate programs in China. Officially named Chongqing Liangjiang KAIST International Program (CLKIP), the international program between Chongqing University of Technology and KAIST was launched to establish a Korea-China industrial complex in the Industrial Development Zone of Liangjiang New Area. Chongqing University of Technology is cooperating with KAIST to open Chongqing International University in Liangjiang. Following the signing of an MOU in 2012, the two institutes received approval for student recruitment from China’s Ministry of Education in 2014. Accordingly, 66 undergraduates were admitted in fall 2015, and the number rose to 189 in 2018. The master’s program (30 in electronic information engineering) was approved in 2015. Two master’s students were admitted in fall 2016, and nine in 2018. KAIST will be teaching one-third of major courses, and providing support in curriculum and syllabus design.

The sixth deans’ meeting of the year was held at the Conference Room of the College of Engineering on June 26. The meeting was attended by Suchan Chae, Vice President for Planning and Budget at KAIST.
