Freshmen starting their first year at KAIST are given one year of foundational education before they select their majors. Based on this year of exploration, they choose the major that best suits their interests and aptitude for further study.

At the College of Engineering, Freshmen can choose a major from three schools (School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering, School of Computing) and nine departments (Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Bio and Brain Engineering, Industrial Design, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, Nuclear & Quantum Engineering).
